Rolling Stone: A Recent Visit to Domaine Ponsot

Recently I visited this Domaine and tasted through a range of the 2012s in barrel with Laurent Ponsot. Even though this vintage is only just finishing malo, and in some cases have just been racked, it is absolutely clear that we have a vintage for the ages from Domaine Ponsot in 2012.

The Side Project

The side project is rarely a successful one. Ever heard the music Arcadia or Brad, for example? Goon Moon? No? What about the Raconteurs, then? Neither have we ― these were side projects, all of which were/still are pale imitations of their parent bands. The folly of the side project isn't limited to the musical sphere, of course.

Luke Lambert joins Bibendum Wine Co.

We are seriously chuffed to announce that from April 15, Luke Lambert wines will be distributed by Bibendum Wine Co. in Victoria, NSW, ACT & SA.

In the liner notes to A Tribute to Jack Johnson, Miles Davis refers to guitarist John McLaughlin's playing as "far in." Those familiar with this record will know what Davis was alluding to; McLaughlin's playing was so natural that it had become indistinguishable from the music he was playing. If you know Luke Lambert and his wines then you will recognise this analogy. Refusing to slavishly follow the conventions and rituals of by-the-book winemaking, Luke Lambert crafts the kind of wine that we feel certain his vineyards would want him to make; deep, wholesome and "far in".

Larmandier-Bernier, Vertus: An important bulletin for lovers of authentic Champagne

Sophie & Pierre LarmandierThis pioneer of terroir-driven, biodynamic Champagne has made a significant change to the labelling and composition of their two entry level wines. The wines formerly known as Brut Tradition and Blanc de Blancs 1er cru will now be known respectively as Latitude and Longitude. The change from Blancs de Blancs to Longitude is really only a name change while the move from Brut Tradition to Latitude also involves a change to the blend; no more Pinot Noir, to enable a wine that can better express its sense of place. As you might have already worked out, both of the ‘new’ cuvées are 100% Blanc de Blancs and both are also Extra Brut with a minimal dosage of 4 g/l. Henceforth, the only wines in the Larmandier range that will contain Pinot Noir will be the Coteaux Rouge and the Rosé de Saignée.

Château La Grolet & Château Peybonhomme-Les-Tours: Fully sick BD Bordeaux

Some may find it hard to believe (until they taste), but the wines listed below offer clear and empirical evidence that great value, artisanal, naturally reared Bordeaux are not terms of contradiction. We could well understand any scepticism regarding this claim. Bordeaux has hardly been the happiest of hunting grounds for us either, especially when it comes to good value. We have had to cope with tasting oceans of astringent, feeble and ludicrously overpriced excuses for wine from this behemoth wine region over the years. And yet finally we feel we’ve cracked it with a pair of superb value, authentic wines that we truly love drinking. Even our resident Bordeaux sceptics were won over by the delicious and soulful wines we have been lucky enough to unearth.

From the Holy Mountain: Neal Martin in Ribeira Sacra

With quotes such as "This is too good to spit out!" and "This is the kind of wine you want to elope with.", it looks like Neal Martin was as gobsmacked by Ribeira Sacra, the region and the wines of it's finest growers, as Rob and Stu became on thier recent travels. Click here for our piece on Dominio Do Bibei and here for Adega Algueira. We have limited stocks of these unique wines remaining.

Domaine de L'Oratoire St-Martin Elegant Titans: The Mourvèdre-rich Cuvées.

The Mourvèdre-rich cuvées from this inspiring Rhône Estate hopefully need little in the way of introduction. This is after all one of the most impeccably-run Domaines in the Southern Rhône, widely-respected for its exemplary biodynamic viticulture and the intense, character rich wines that result.

Domaine François Lamarche La Grande Rue: The Road less travelled...

"I have to agree with Lamarche that they did indeed achieve truly remarkable finesse across their various terroirs. The tannins are extremely sophisticated and many wines have a seductively silky mouth feel." Allen Meadows on the 2010s, Burghound Issue #45

"In a village replete with over-achievers it is a relief that such an important establishment, and possessor of one of the four grand cru monopolies in the commune of Vosne-Romanée, now produces wines as good as they should be...Lamarche is now a top domaine, with wines which express themselves through their subtlety rather than their power. Since 1999, and more especially since 2005, the quality has been top-notch. This is now a three star domaine." Clive Coates MW

Riesling guru sizes up Mac Forbes' RS14

Riesling guru, Stuart Piggot (pre-eminent wine writer in Germany and all-roud Riesling ambassador) recently sized up Mac Forbes' RS14 Strathbogie Riesling. Here is what he had to say on his blog. Stuart also sends some props in the direction of Mac's Yarra Chardonnay and Pinots.

"Yesterday evening I tasted a revolutionary Australian Riesling, which didn’t taste like any other Australian Riesling I’d ever encountered before.
