Matt Holmes, Bannockburn’s new chief winemaker: a brief bio

Matt has spent two years as Assistant Winemaker at Dromana Estate prior to duties as Vintage Winemaker at Bannockburn in 2005. He travelled to Canada after the Bannockburn vintage to take up the position of Winemaker for the inaugural release at Tantalus Vineyards, Kelowna, in British Columbia where he worked for four years. Three separate wines of his, from three separate vintages were awarded “Best wine in Canada”, “Best Riesling in North America”, and “Best White Wine in Canada” by Jancis Robinson.

Matt left Tantalus in 2009 and did vintage at Twomey in California, before becoming Winemaker & Vineyard Manager at Liquidity winery, Okanagan Falls in British Columbia for 5 years – designed and built the winery.

At the age of 38, with travel between Northern and Southern hemispheres, he has now worked 25 vintages in North America (California and British Columbia), France (Peyriac-de-Mer), Italy (Piemonte), New Zealand (Nelson and Central Otago), and Australia (Yarra Valley, Henty, Mornington Peninsula, Hunter Valley, Great Southern W.A and Geelong).

Matt obviously has big shoes to fill, but with this kind experience behind him we are sure he will make his own mark at Bannockburn Vineyards. We look forward to tasting the results!
